If your visa is valid for more than 180 days – or specifically says "registration required" – you must register within 14 days of arrival and obtain a Residential Permit. Tourist visa holders are generally exempt.

Frequently asked questions about FRRO registration
Who needs to register with the FRRO in India?
All foreign nationals (including minors above 16 years) entering India on a visa valid for more than 180 days – such as Employment, Student, Research, Medical, Project, Entry (X), Journalist and Missionary visas – must register with the FRRO/FRO within 14 days of arrival. Tourist visa holders generally do not need to register. Pakistani nationals must register within 24 hours and Afghan nationals within 7 days.
What is the deadline for FRRO registration?
Within 14 days of arrival in India for most visa categories. If the visa specifically states “Registration required within 14 days” you must register even if the visa validity is under 180 days.
What happens if I register late?
Late registration attracts a penalty and requires an explanation letter. Prolonged non-registration is a violation of the Foreigners Act and can lead to fines, difficulty in obtaining extensions or an exit permit, and in serious cases, blacklisting. Contact us immediately if you have missed the deadline.
Is FRRO registration online or do I have to visit the office?
Registration is done online through the e-FRRO portal (indianfrro.gov.in). Physical appearance is only required if the FRRO specifically calls you for an interview or document verification, which we help you prepare for.
What is a Residential Permit (RP)?
The Residential Permit is the document issued by the FRRO on successful registration. It states your registered address, sponsor and permitted period of stay. Carry it (or a digital copy) at all times and present it at departure.
When should I apply for RP renewal or visa extension?
Apply at least 30–60 days before your Residential Permit or visa expires. Applications filed after expiry are treated as overstay cases.
Do I need an Exit Permit to leave India?
You need an Exit Permit if your visa or RP has expired, if you overstayed, if your passport was lost and replaced with an Emergency Certificate, or if your visa carries an exit endorsement condition. If your visa and RP are valid, no exit permit is required.
